Blocks (caps) come in pairs (positive and negative) and are used to alternately stamp the design in wax, then to protect it in subsequent dyeing. A sarong design uses anywhere from 2 to 16 blocks, although 6 is typical.
A very experienced worker can make the "positive" block in two days or two "negative" blocks in one day. It is a lot harder than it looks.
